Outcast Sister by James Davidson – Blog tour

The search for a missing detective brings simmering rivalries to boiling point…
Some five years since parting ways, Detective Eleanor Rose receives a message from Daniel, her ex-boyfriend and former colleague. He is in danger. He needs her help.
Eleanor is compelled to return to Liverpool, but dreads what she’ll find there. Her parents are dead. She has no friends.
She doesn’t trust her old colleagues. And her half-sister… well… enough said about her.
When Eleanor’s search for Daniel takes her to Sundial Court housing estate, her worries
multiply. Lawless, seedy, destitute, it seems the worst of humanity is festering within its dark streets and desolate houses.
It turns out that her ex-boyfriend was investigating a serious crime there. It soon looks pretty likely he didn’t get out alive.
But whatever fate befell him, Eleanor is stumbling perilously close to it herself. Who or what is drawing her in?
OUTCAST SISTER is the sensational debut crime novel by British author James Davidson. It is perfect for fans of Robert McCracken, J M Dalgliesh, Valerie Keogh, and Angela Marsons.
The second book in the series will be out in 2024

This book hits you right between the eyes from the very first paragraph. Immediately, it’s obvious that it’s going to be a dark and difficult read. Perfect for fans of this genre. When we first meet Eleanor, she is in London, on the edge and on the run, but we find that this has been her default action for quite some time.
Beth – the half-sister, policing the streets of Liverpool, is very well drawn and, from the moment we first meet her, we can sense her character. For me, there was instant dislike, but this really made me want to read on to find out why she is the way she is.
Great scene setting throughout the book. For example, the description of a homeless man dragging himself through the city is heartrending even though we are told that he isn’t a ‘good’ man. The descriptive writing here is very good indeed.
The twists are many and surprising as the plot unwinds and we see the exposure of corruption, threats, bullying, and downright evil. This is not a story for the fainthearted but if you like your crime novels down and dirty, Outcast Sister by James Davidson, should certainly appeal.

James Davidson has hitherto only had a collection of poetry published, and we are delighted
to bring out the first of his books, Outcast Sister.
James was born in Liverpool, where he has now returned to live after several years in Central
Europe. Having been mainly based in Budapest and Prague, his experiences there had a
major influence on his fiction. He uses real events in history to explore the ideological
legacies of the twentieth century from new angles. His currently unpublished debut novel
The Chain, an existential Cold War thriller, won the First Novel Prize in 2019. With his
background in journalism and academic interest in creative writing, James shows enormous
potential as a novelist. Dark, mysterious, and ethereal – think D M Thomas and Andrei
Platonov – readers will appreciate this new, truly original voice.
